Tools and Process

carving the clayMy work is primarily thrown. I spend much of my time focusing on surface imagery; carving and patterning. The work is highly detailed, with carving that wraps under the foot of the bowls, around the rim of the jars. A drawing of an object may be hidden under the foot of a cup, to be seen only when washing up, or in conversation with another tea drinker.

my toolsThe pieces develop slowly—I throw them thick, draw, and then carve the rough design. After sanding the unfired pot, I add color in the form of slips, patterning through this. Once the pots are bisqued, I glaze the interiors and inlay glaze into patterns. My hope is that the resulting pots are lush both in surface and feel.
